Solid arrival numbers, record-breaking performance in 2025, and sustained economic impact position the island as a key cruise hub in the Caribbean.
Cozumel, one of Mexico’s most important cruise destinations, has started 2026 on a high note, with 56 cruise ship arrivals projected for January, including 21 vessels that have already docked. The early momentum reinforces the positive trend seen at the end of 2025 and confirms the island’s strategic role in Caribbean cruise itineraries.
Last year marked a milestone for the destination. Throughout 2025, Cozumel welcomed 1,300 cruise ships carrying more than 4.7 million passengers, representing a 1.48% increase compared to the previous year. Peak activity was recorded in January, March, November, and December, highlighting the island’s year-round appeal for cruise operators.
Tourism authorities have attributed this growth to a coordinated tourism strategy involving public institutions, private stakeholders, and international partners, with a clear focus on long-term sustainability and orderly development. As a result, 2025 was widely recognized as the most successful year in the history of cruise tourism in Quintana Roo.
The economic impact on the local community has been substantial. Estimates indicate an average onshore spending of 84 US dollars per cruise passenger, generating approximately 397.5 million dollars in revenue during 2025. These resources directly benefited tour operators, retailers, restaurants, and small businesses across the island.
Outlook for early 2026 remains optimistic. The schedule for the first weeks of January alone includes 56 cruise calls, reflecting strong confidence from cruise lines in Cozumel’s infrastructure, services, and visitor experience. This activity is further supported by a five-dollar state cruise passenger fee, earmarked for tourism infrastructure improvements and destination enhancements.
With a robust start to the year, Cozumel continues to strengthen its position as one of the leading cruise destinations in the Caribbean, combining high-volume arrivals with economic benefits and a forward-looking approach to sustainable tourism growth.
